OUR JOURNEY

Our History

A legacy of service spanning over six decades, shaping Ghana's justice system

1957

Independence & Establishment

The Ministry of Justice was established following Ghana's independence, marking the beginning of a new era in the nation's legal and justice system. The ministry was tasked with upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all citizens of the newly independent nation.

1992

Constitutional Reform

The adoption of the Fourth Republic Constitution strengthened the ministry's role in protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms. This period saw significant reforms in the justice delivery system and the establishment of key institutions.

2007

Legal Aid Expansion

The Legal Aid Scheme was significantly expanded to provide free legal services to indigent citizens across all regions. This initiative ensured that access to justice was no longer limited by financial constraints.

2015

Digital Transformation

Launch of the e-Justice system, introducing digital case management, electronic filing, and online court services. This modernization significantly improved efficiency and accessibility of justice services.

2020

Alternative Dispute Resolution

Establishment of comprehensive ADR mechanisms including mediation and arbitration centers nationwide, reducing court congestion and providing faster, more accessible justice solutions.

2024

Present Day Excellence

Today, the Ministry continues to lead in legal innovation, human rights protection, and justice delivery. With modern facilities, trained personnel, and cutting-edge technology, we serve over 30 million Ghanaians with dedication and excellence.
